Stop made along I-10 in Beaumont

A man is dead after Beaumont police say he swallowed some type of drug following a traffic stop.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, patrol officers stopped a vehicle in the 2600 block of Interstate 10 East. Officers say there were four people in the vehicle.

A police spokesperson said as officers talked to the people inside the vehicle, they saw one of them drop something on the ground. Officers determined it to be a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine. Officers took that person into custody and temporarily detained the others.

As the officers spoke with the other occupants, they saw that the driver appeared to have something in his mouth. The spokesperson said officers told the man to spit out what was in his mouth and he refused. The man would not comply with instructions, was belligerent, and refused to spit out the object. A struggle ensued and sometime during the struggle, the man swallowed the object in his mouth. Officers could see residue in the man's mouth and it appeared to be crack cocaine. Officers immediately summoned Beaumont EMS.

Beaumont EMS arrived and took the man to a local hospital. The man was alert and conscious throughout the ride to the hospital. The police spokesperson said the man remained extremely uncooperative. He refused treatment at the hospital but then he began to have a seizure. Hospital personnel worked to save the man, but he was pronounced dead at about 12:01 a.m. Wednesday morning.
