TYLER – Although East Texas is thought of by some as one of the key Republican areas for state-wide elections, John McCain supporters say they are not taking East Texas votes for granted.
Smith County Republican Party Chairman Ashton Oravetz explained how this is not a typical election, and it has brought out hundreds of Republican volunteers.
Oravetz says most of those volunteers have been “manning” the polling locations throughout the county.
They have come from the Smith County Woman’s Republican Club, the Young Republicans Club, and the Men’s Smith County Republican Club.
In addition to those clubs, volunteers from throughout Smith County started coming out in droves the day Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was named.
Oravetz believes McCain has a loyal following here in East Texas.
“I am loyal to John McCain because he is the best of the two candidates that are running right now,” Oravetz explains, “and I think this is a critical election for the United States.”
A large group of McCain supporters plan to gather together in downtown Tyler after the polls close at 7:00 p.m. to closely monitor the election results on television.
