Meetings held to discuss alcohol sales at Lufkin civic center
AS REPORTED IN THE LUFKIN DAILY NEWS:
The Coalition recently had “a positive meeting” with city of Lufkin officials in regard to the city’s application to serve alcohol at Pitser Garrison Civic Center, according to the executive director of the Angelina County anti-drug abuse agency.
“We promised to continue to work with the city,” Janet Taylor said.
When an organization secures a permit for any large facility, The Coalition likes to meet with the group to ensure that safeguards are in place, Taylor said. Now that The Coalition has met with the city initially, and held a board meeting Thursday to discuss concerns among its members, it will meet again to produce concrete ideas for ways to keep underage people from purchasing alcohol at city functions, Taylor said.
“We do have concerns about the sale of alcohol in places other than the civic center,” Taylor said, referring to the city’s ability to sell alcohol in other places, such as the Pines Theater, once the permit is approved.
Two safeguards that Taylor mentioned were ensuring that underage people were not allowed at events that included alcohol, and ensuring that servers were sufficiently trained beforehand.
