Memorabilia on display this week during annual East Texas Yamboree in Gilmer
It was 1976 when a young woman named Phebe Phillips dared to break an age-old tradition and shocked East Texas.
As she walked onto that Gilmer stage, Phillips was crowned the 39th East Texas Yamboree queen. She was the first Yamboree queen to wear a dress that was not white.
“She wore a red velvet dress,” Amy Patterson said. “It was the first time a girl had worn a color dress. It really surprised everyone.”
Since the Yamboree’s inception in 1935, the most prominent event has been the queen’s coronation. Beyond learning who will wear the crown each year, the second biggest question is what will Queen Yam wear on her coronation day?
