Memorial to distribute heart disease prevention materials for Valentine's Day

The statistics concerning heart disease are sobering.

According to the Society of Chest Pain Centers, heart disease caused about one of every six deaths in the United States in 2006.

An estimated 785,000 Americans in 2011 experienced a first-time heart attack, and an estimated 470,000 experienced a repeat attack.

Every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and every minute, someone will die of one.

But there is good news: Heart disease is preventable.

As part of American Heart Month, the staff at Memorial Medical Center-Lufkin will celebrate Valentine’s Day by distributing heart disease prevention educational materials to patients and visitors. Stroke Program Director Sabrina Lillard said the distributed literature demonstrates that heart attacks can be prevented and gives signs, symptoms and risk factors.
