KETK Tyler, Tx — A meteor tore through the sky this morning and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains.

The strike, which has the power of an atomic bomb, hurt more than 750 people.

The meteor created a concussion wave that felt like an explosion.

City officials in Russia say thousands of people were scared claiming the world was coming to an end.

But astronomers say this happens and it is bound to happen again.

"Our space program, our astronomy program needs to be further developed so that we can detect more of these. It's going to happen though its just a matter of time," said Director for Earth and Space Science Education at TJC Tom Hooten.

Hooten says thousands of small meteoroids hit the earth everyday.

Hooten says it is difficult to detect all the meteoroids that will hit the earth.

"We're fortunate in a sense that nobody was hurt but we're more aware of it now. If this happened in a secluded spot on the planet we would have never known about it."

The last big meteorite to hit the earth was the Tunguska event in 1908.

The meteorite also hit Russia and knocked over 80 million trees.

Space enthusiast Robert Parish says something like this has not been recorded since 1908.

Parish says it is a very exciting day in the world of astronomy.

"It's exciting. Something like this hasn't happened since 1908," said Parish.

"It's awesome to see something like that recorded on video . It's very rare and also very exciting from an astronomy perspective to see that," said Hooten.
