JACKSONVILLE, TEXAS (KETK) — The Lone Star Military Resource Group in Cherokee County had helped many troops and their families. They're currently operating in a small office in a building shared with others in Jacksonville. They need all the support they can get.
Julianne Sanford of Cherokee County has a military family and saw the need for military support in East Texas, which is why she started the Lone Star Military Resource Group three years ago. "The high rate of suicide in the military family and the military family deterioration I wanted to anything I could, I had a lot of resources and training through the National Guard and I wanted to share that with many people as possible," said Julianne Sanford, Founder of LSMRG.
As the community grows more space is needed to help support members of re military and their families. The organization's goal is to have counselors on site and community leaders to volunteer. "We would like a big building in which we could share with other veteran service organizations, they can hold their meeting there," said Sanford. She adds, "It would definitely be helpful if someone has administrative skills and would like to help organize the efforts that we have in a better way."
The LSMRG and the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville will host their annual event on April 15th. "April is the month to celebrate military children, so I learned about 'Purple Up" so last year was our first Purple Up Poster contest," said Jana Bateman, Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville member. They're asking the community to wear purple that day to show appreciation.
Sanford hopes to expand the program throughout East Texas. She says, a center and more support will offer a warm hand to these brave men and women as they return home.
If you would like to contact LSMRG to volunteer, donate and discuss opportunities contact Julianne Sanford at (903) 810-0303.
Next meeting will be April 28, 6:30pm at:
Legends Ole Time Burger Cafe, 1630 S. Jackson, Jacksonville, TX 75766
