Mixed numbers on jobs
Unemployment rose slightly to 9.6 percent in August.
More temporary census jobs went away, creating a loss of 54,000 jobs overall, but the numbers are better than expected.
Private companies hired 67,000 workers.
President Obama said things are slowly turning around.
"The economy is moving in a positive direction, jobs are being created, they're just not being created as fast as they need to given the big hole we experienced," he said.
Fewer people filed unemployment claims last week, and though private companies cut 10,000 jobs last month, planned layoffs hit the lowest level in a decade.
