Model rig moves from LeTourneau University to presidential library
Longview — A model of an offshore mobile drilling platform created by R.G. LeTourneau for former President George H.W. Bush was moved Tuesday from its home at the Longview university to the president’s library in College Station, where it will be on display for the next year.
The model, housed on the third floor of the R.G. LeTourneau Memorial Student Center in a 11-by-8-by-8-foot glass case, will be on display as part of the exhibit “Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery” at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the Texas A&M University campus.
The drilling rig was built in 1956 by LeTourneau for the former president, who owned Zapata Oil.
Colorado resident Frank Olson, a former worker at LeTourneau University’s physical plant, said he built the model more than 30 years ago to outfit the student center, which opened in 1976.
