More security work in Precinct 3
KETK continues it’s examination of the controversies surrounding a Smith County Constable.
The investigation of Precinct 3 Constable Dustin Rust is targeted at off-duty security work done by deputies.
Constable Rust has repeatedly declared his innocence in the investigation.
But District Attorney Matt Bingham suspects Rust was running a private security firm out of the Constable’s office.
Today, we heard about another neighborhood looking for protection.
This is West Grove Club Lake Road.
It’s off highway 110 between Whitehouse and Troup.
And when KETk heard that the constable Precinct 3 Constable may have approached the neighborhood here on Grove Club Lake, we wanted to get the facts.
We asked Constable Dustin Rust if he was actually trolling for security work for his office.
Rust told us, they approached him.
So we tracked down the homeowners association president Earl Hengen, he confirmed for us on the phone, they approached the constable, not the other way around.
And when the price of roughly $6000 for an aofficer was quoted, that ended the conversation.
So, the discussions appear to have been above board.
In an earlier story on this, Dustin Rust’s father Donn Rust, who is running for Sheriff, pointed the finger of blame at his opponent Larry Smith and a supporter, Commissioner Carey Nix, as being involved in this investigation.
Tomorrow, we’ll have more on the inside negotiations in the case.
