Mosquito control on East Texas cities’ to-do list

Longview, TX — After the deadliest-ever year for West Nile virus and another mild, damp winter, East Texas cities already are gearing up to battle mosquitoes.
“The recipe is there for a bad year, and we’re not going to sit there and wait until it shows,” said J.C. Hughes, public works and water utilities director for Marshall. “We don’t want to wait this year. We wanted to start early.”
This past year, more than 240 people across the nation died from the mosquito-borne illness — and about a third of those were in Texas. While the Dallas-Fort Worth area was hardest hit, West Nile claimed lives in Gregg, Harrison, Panola and Bowie counties and infected hundreds of other East Texans.
