The Texas teen who gave birth to a baby boy found abandoned in a Houston dumpster has been charged with child abandonment.

The identity of the 16-year-old who was arrested Thursday has not been released since she is a minor.

Baby Carlos was found by a maintenance worker at an apartment complex on February 25th.

Investigators say the teen admitted to placing the baby in the dumpster, but she thought the baby was dead.

The Harris County District Attorney, Devon Anderson, says while the charge carries a penalty of 2 to 20 years for adults, the teen may be eligible for a type of probation since she is a juvenile.

Anderson also says her office is now discussing whether to seek certification to have the teen stand trial as an adult.

A judge ruled in a custody hearing Friday that Carlos will remain in temporary custody of the state.

As awful as this is we need to not prosecute these helpless mothers. That is hard for me to say given the fact that if the trash was picked-up and the baby was crushed that would be murder. We need to all start a public awareness (like the Amber alert) who's in? Email me. Churches, police stations, fire stations, hospital lobbies all are places that save lives. We need a place were these babies can be dropped off No questions asked, no repercussions, no judging. Let's start now-I'm ready!

They already do have places like that and she still threw him in the garbage. That's whats wrong now they let people like this go scott free. Hang her butt from the highest tree.

She deserves more than a slap on the wrist, she threw that kid in the "trash" of all places like it was nothing.

If America with the 51 million abortions since Roe vs Wade had not made laws to cheapen life, perhaps this would not have happened. Clinics get rid of the unborn every day and dispose of them as though these children were nothing and no one gets up in arms about it. Why be upset at this? She will probably be charged with not going to an abortion clinic where she could pay to get rid of her child. "We have sown the wind and now reaping a whirlwind."

Katie, this mother should be charged with attempted murder. Safe Haven laws allow a child up to 30 days old to be dropped-off at hospitals/fire stations...without any questions. This mother chose a dumpster.
