From horses to cactus, cowboys to bison, the Museum of East Texas displayed the best of western art created by Lufkin, Hudson and West Sabine students during a reception Tuesday.

For the past five years, the museum has hosted the art exhibit in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo art contest. Volunteer judges came to Lufkin on Saturday to examine the art featuring a western heritage and culture theme. Museum executive director J.P. McDonald said judges spent several hours critiquing the nearly 700 pieces of student work.

“They are very exact in their selection,” McDonald said. “We are so proud to host this exhibit each year. It’s remarkable what the children do each year. We are always so proud of them.”

Students from first grade through high school are eligible to compete each year.
