NAACP program reflects 50 years of civil rights history
Longview — On the 50th anniversary of the bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., Longview community members gathered to remember.
“We’re here to remember our history and commemorate the lives of those girls, and to look at where we’ve been and where we are going,” said Ruth Hathaway, chairwoman of the NAACP educational committee that sponsored the event.
Fifty years ago, four little girls were killed by a bomb blast from 19 sticks of dynamite planted by Ku Klux Klan members at the base of the building.
