Nacogdoches County, TX — Two Nacogdoches County jailers were booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail Monday afternoon in connection to the death of then-inmate Edwinta Deckard.
Elizabeth Ann Owens, 40, of Nacogdoches, and Danny Ray Russell, 35, of Douglass, are charged with criminally negligent homicide, a state jail felony. The two posted a $4,000 bond each and were released less than an hour after being booked into the jail, according to the jail records.
Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss, in a previous Sentinel article, said two jailers had been suspended with pay in connection with Deckard’s death, but had declined to name the jailers at that time. The two will remain on paid suspension until the cases are resolved.
Edwinta Deckard, 53, died Monday, Dec. 5, at Memorial Hospital after being transported there by sheriff’s department employees.
An autopsy was ordered and the cause of death has been determined to be “natural causes, attributed mostly to dehydration,” Kerss said.
