Two Nacogdoches County jailers were booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail Monday afternoon in connection to the death of then-inmate Edwinta Deckard.

Elizabeth Ann Owens, 40, of Nacogdoches, and Danny Ray Russell, 35, of Douglass, are charged with criminally negligent homicide, a state jail felony. The two posted a $4,000 bond each and were released less than an hour after being booked into the jail, according to the jail records.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss, in a previous Sentinel article, said two jailers had been suspended with pay in connection with Deckard’s death, but had declined to name the jailers at that time. The two will remain on paid suspension until the cases are resolved.

Edwinta Deckard, 53, died Monday, Dec. 5, at Memorial Hospital after being transported there by sheriff’s department employees.

An autopsy was ordered and the cause of death has been determined to be “natural causes, attributed mostly to dehydration,” Kerss said.

As someone who was arrested under suspicious circumstances to begin with, was threatened by the arresting officer with "if you don't sign this, NO YOU DON'T NEED TO READ IT he would BREAK MY DAMN ARM" in front of a county jailer. Forgive me if I am a little skeptical of the integrity of these jailers. NO ONE DESERVES TO DIE FROM NEGLECT ! ! !

Yet another instance of law enforcement.Strange how all these criminals in uniform have been basically immune to accountability and retribution. There is obviously a "Closing of Ranks" when bad cops do their thing. Do not even wait for a verdict in this case, they will be cleared of all charges. And they are being PAID when an inmate has died in their custody.I believe this to be a SUSPICIOUS DEATH. These people should be fired and receive an appropriate punishment for their lack of vigilence!

Since you are so "aware" of how the "system" is, then I highly suggest you sign up! I am sure you won't though, probably just another coward who likes to criticize but can't do what you criticize about.
