A Nacogdoches police officer is up for an award after saving a shoplifter from a fiery wreck.

On May 31, Nacogdoches officers were searching for a thief that had just left a local grocery store in a vehicle.

During the search, Officer John Allen came upon the suspect’s SUV at the bottom of a hill, wrecked head-on into some trees. The vehicle had struck trees at a high rate of speed and was smoking. The driver was trapped and severely injured. The engine compartment of the car was in flames and the lower dash area of the interior passenger compartment became engulfed in flames as well; the car was filled with heavy smoke.

Officer Allen, along with a local citizen, Douglass Volunteer Firefighter Adrian Nichols, forced their way into the SUV and pulled the trapped driver from the burning car. Allen and Nichols placed themselves in the back seat and pulled the driver over the seat to free him from the burning interior.

As soon as the three were clear from the vehicle, the entire car became engulfed in flames. Had Officer Allen not continued to search for the suspect, the driver would have died within a few minutes of the accident.

Officer Allen’s and Mr. Nichols’ actions demonstrate their character and their commitment as public servants. Both placed their life in great danger to save another person and both are assets to the Nacogdoches community.

Congratulations to Officer John Allen who has been nominated for TCLEOSE’s Life Saving Award as a result of his heroic act.
