(KETK) Tyler Tx — As you drive up and down the hills of U.S.. Highway 80, just outside the Gladewater city limits, you might see a tall flag pole, marking the final resting place of East Texas war hero Travis E. Watkins.
"That man sacrificed his life so that others would live, it's above and beyond the call of duty, to me he is also watching over the rest if the veterans that are also there" said Linda Reed with Tyler Veterans Home.
Which is why she spearheaded the movement, to name that stretch of road Travis E. Watkins Memorial Highway.
"I thought it was important so I ran with it and fortunately everyone ran with me."
For Reed, it's just a small way in not just keeping one hero's legacy alive.
"Without the memory of what it was that they did where are the history books, where's our history, we have to educate our children and pass this forward or history will die right where it is right now."
And she hopes, National Medal of Honor Day, will not get lost in the shuffle of often overlooked military remembrances, and days of thanks.
To find out how to donate contact the Tyler Veterans Home at (903) 617-6150 and ask for Linda Reed.
