Longview,Texas (KETK) — This week is national flu shot week.
High fever, coughing, aches and pains are a few signs of the flu.
Medical experts say the illness can be prevented with a quick shot.
"Getting a flu shot is the best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu" said Gregg County Immunization Program coordinator Bettie Clark.
Pharmacist Shawn Sams said " there's very few contraindications where we would want somebody to not have one, even small children and pregnant women should get them."
The vaccine is offered at health clinics, hospitals, and drug stores. It is recommended for everyone above the age of 6 months and doctors say the vaccine can be life-saving for those in the high-risk group.
Clark said, " those who are 50 years and older, persons who are chronically ill, those who have asthma, diabetes, heart and lung disease."
Betsy Tidwell says she's been getting the flu shot for years because one experience with the bug was enough, " it was a good sample and I don't want to have it again, so i'll take precautions."
Local pharmacist Shawn Sams says his Longview pharmacy has given around 5,000 flu shots since September. Medical professionals say there are other precautions to take to avoid the flu, " make sure you keep your hands washed, if you go somewhere where you shake a lot of hands make sure you take some alcohol hand sanitizer."
