Nationwide alert set for 1:00 pm today
U.S. — A national test of the emergency alert system will be conducted today.
At approximately 1 pm central standard time, the state of Texas will participate in a nationwide test of the emergency alert system.
This test will be heard on commercial and public radio and seen on local cable and satellite television for a period of between 30 seconds and 1 minute.
The purpose of the test is to assess the readiness and effectiveness of the emergency alert system and identify improvements to better serve our communities to preserve life and property.
Although the emergency alert system is frequently used by the national weather service and state and local governments to send weather alerts and other emergency notices, there has never been a national activation of the system.
