Longview, Tx (KETK) — Negotiations for a $9 million water agreement between Kilgore and Longview are over. The agreement would have provided millions of gallons of water to Kilgore from Longview.
Kilgore is at risk for a water shortage within the next 15 years and Longview has an excess, so a water share agreement seemed like a perfect solution. But, in recent weeks council members in both cities began to feel hesitant about the plan.
At this week's city council meeting some residents spoke harsh words about the agreement and about the city of Longview, which led Mayor Jay Dean to end the deal.
"We were being dragged into some political turmoil in Kilgore..that we really don't want to be a part of..so it's in the best interest of everybody, in my opinion, that we remove ourselves..and not move forward with that negotiation."
Kilgore city manager Scott Sellers says other factors went into the joint decision to not move forward.
"We hope that the engineering and again a study of the whole system..will be able to answer all those questions definitively so that we will know whether or not to approach Longview..or another water provider for water..and when."
