New Kilgore ISD Superintendent Cara Cooke spent much of Tuesday touring campuses.

Trustees were unanimous Monday in formally hiring Cooke, a 25-year educator with East Texas roots, to lead the 3A school district.

Most recently an assistant superintendent in the Industrial ISD, Cooke was named Kilgore’s lone finalist by the board Feb. 25. State law requires a 21-day gap between naming a finalist or finalists and hiring a superintendent.

Cooke said earlier this month she planned to spend the remainder of this school year getting to know her new district, saying she planned to ride the district’s school buses as she learns the terrain and her new charges.

Cooke started her education career as an elementary teacher in Palestine before returning to her native Neches where she was principal of the elementary campus.

She and her husband, Richard, next moved to South Texas, where she worked five years as assistant superintendent at Industrial ISD.
