As Longview officials took time Thursday to recognize the opening of the city’s new compost site, its coordinator praised a recent change that will make the site a “regional compost facility.”

“We are appreciative,” Compost Coordinator Dave Wimberly said. “Council has recently passed an ordinance which gives us an opportunity to move to a new phase, and we are now going to be able to let folks come in from other areas, from commercial establishments, because now we will be able to charge them.”

The measure, approved by the City Council in April, will levy a charge of $7.50 per cubic yard of waste for non-residents. Those who live in Longview and have a water bill will be able to continue using the compost site at 2020 Swinging Bridge Road free of charge.
