New 'Grazing Calc' smartphone helps producers maximize productivity
Tyler, TX (KETK) — The 'Grazing Calc' is the newest smartphone application helping livestock producers. Created by Texas A&M, the app calculates the correct number of animals for a particular property.
KETK spoke with Ashley Pellerin, the Extension Agent for Prairie View A&M University, who said, "It deals with stocking rates, so it deals with the amount of animals that you can put on an acre of land to maximize production". By asking specific questions about acreage and available forage, it helps avoid common pitfalls. Pellerin said, "You don't want to overgraze you don't want to overstock, so then you're killing grass and you won't have anything left for the future. So this app will help you properly stock your animals so that you can avoid over-grazing and continue to raise healthy pastures".
The app creator, Blake Alldredge, hopes to eliminate these problems altogether. Alldredge said, "Being able to see the number of animals and their forage consumption, and not just throwing their livestock out on the land and then hoping for the best. This provides them a little bit more planning". The app even includes a video with step by step instruction. It can figure out the correct number for the property, the benefits of having a certain number of livestock, and how it can impact water quantity and quality. So the goal, is to maximize long-term productivity.
