New Mexico man arrested for 8th DWI
LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) — A Las Cruces man was arrested and charged with his 8th DWI offense after he allegedly disabled his vehicle's interlock device and caused a crash around 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to the 1400 block of W. Picacho around 2 p.m. when they received a call about a crash that had occurred. When Las Cruces Police arrived, they determined that 46-year-old Ruben Montes was driving a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 south on Picacho Ave. when the 67-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Silverado in front of him slowed to make a turn into a business.
That's when police say that Montes crashed into the rear of the Silverado and then allegedly attempted to back up in order to leave the scene. Montes was unable to leave because the bumper of his truck was stuck to the back of the Silverado.
Police learned that Montes had seven prior DWI arrests and was driving on a suspended license. They also determined that Montes had managed to disable to interlock system on his truck so that he could drive.
The driver of the Silverado was uninjured, and Montes initially denied any injuries but then complained of a leg injury and refused to undergo field sobriety tests.
Montes was charged with aggravated DWI, driving on a suspended license, driving with an open container and driving too close. He was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $1,000 bond and was able to post bail within three hours of booking.
