AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Republican state Rep. Debbie Riddle of
Houston has filed a bill that would make it a felony to knowingly
hire an illegal immigrant  unless the person is a domestic
worker.

Critics of the proposal say it's hypocritical for lawmakers
to vow to crack down on illegal immigration and then create a
exemption for jobs like maids and landscapers.
