Tyler, TX — We are a few days away from October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

New research has discovered distinct types of breast cancer.

• Her 2-Enriched
• Luminal A
• Luminal B
• Basel-like

A study in the journal Nature, studied the DNA of breast cancer tumors of over 800 patients at various stages of the disease.

During an analysis, the four types of breast cancer types show characteristics of other body cancers.

KETK spoke to Dr. Sauter, Surgical Oncologist, at The University of Tyler Health Center.

"What's new in the study I think is the fact that there are certain mutations as well as protein alterations that may be useful for targeted therapy," says Dr. Sauter.

Within the subtypes of cancer, the study finds that one type of breast cancer Basel-like is similar to ovarian cancer.

" First of all, that was totally unexpected, and secondly it might be that the drugs that we know work for ovarian cancer might also work for this type of cancer which is very hard to treat," says Dr.Sauter.

Dr. Sauter adds, "This study is really once a woman is known to have cancer how do we treat her."

Dr. Sauter says, the study provides opportunity of treatment. and suggests awareness of breast cancer, knowing the importance of preventing, detecting, and treatment.
