For years East Texas swimmer have been diving into Tyler ISD's aquatic centers pool. Everyone from Olympic and national qualifiers, to first time swimmers. "It was built by a family back in the early eighties that had competitive swimmers that wanted to insure that program would continue through high school successfully," said Matt Franks, head swim coach.

With more interest in the sport, he says they're quickly outgrowing their facility. "It's really exploded in the last 12 years in east Texas, since I've been here," Franks said. He also told us he's thrilled to hear board trustees approved money for a new natatorium. "This is a lifelong sport, and were looking forward to reintroducing it to the community," said Franks.

It will be built next to the new career and technology center off Earl Campbell Parkway and it will give Tyler teams a chance to host swim meets. "In the last right years we've been on the road the entire season and we've never had a home meet," said Franks. Swimming parent Christy Richbourg knows first hand how difficult this can be. She said, "currently when the swim teams go to competitions on the weekends we have to drive at least an hour to another facility."

Richbourg said this is not only great for her two sons, but the entire community. She said, "there's so many groups looking for a facility to swim in that i think that getting people in the pool and getting people to participate is not going to be a challenge." Franks agreed saying, "its not just a summer sport, its not just to have fun in the backyard pool, they can really achieve some lofty goals once they get involved with the program."
