There was quite a turnout today for the dedication of a new retirement facility here in Tyler.
It's named for three American heros, and it is the final home for many more.
And it's proof that sometimes, government gets it right.
It's called the Watkins-Logan-Garrison Texas State Veterans Home
And it is a joint project of the Veterans Administration and the Texas Veterans Land Board.
Named for Travis Watkins, a soldier in World War Two and Korea, who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously...James Logan, a sodier who won the Medal of honor in Italy during the war...and Samuel Garrison, a pilot with the famed Tuskegee Airmen who won two silver and two bronze stars in north Africa, Italy and the South Pacific.
Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson says, the new facility is state of the art.
And Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Veterans Administration John Garcia told KETK it was an ideal mix of stimulous program money from the VA and a partial match from the state of Texas.
But mostly, it's all about the vets.
Patterson told KETK they were trying for a look and feel that was less institutional and more like home.
They succeeded.
