Rusk County has one of the highest numbers of fatal car accidents per capita in the nation.

Officials created a program to reduce that staggering statistic and it appears to be working because there have been zero fatality car accidents in 2014 in Rusk County so far.

There were 30 fatal car accidents in rusk county last year alone.

Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Price says the accidents were spread out across the county and there is no particularly dangerous highway or road the accidents had in common.

" Different types of road services..different parts of the county..county roads..farm to market roads..state highways..one cars..multi cars..daytime..night-time..there was no contributing factors to link all of them together."

Oficials say the only common denominator in the wrecks was driver inattention and in a few cases, alcohol..so "Pay Attention East Texas" was created to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving, texting and driving, and drunk driving.

The Sheriff's Department holds "traffic fatality summits" every month as part of the program where they show graphic details about the consequences of drinking and driving and texting and driving. program volunteers also visit high schools and churches.

Due to the high number of fatal car accidents in past years..Rusk County has increased DPS troopers and deputies patrolling traffic around the county. Sheriff Price says that's helping make roads safer as well.
