KETK had reports of a local game warden being shot on a hunting trip over the weekend. We spoke to Smith County Sheriff's Office and they tell us that it was not anyone local in East Texas but a North Texas game warden.

According to media reports, Delta County Game Warden, Chris Fried, was on a hunting trip

A North Texas game warden was shot during a hunting trip over the weekend in the Cooper Wildlife Management Area between Paris and Sulphur Springs when he was shot in the chest on Sunday.

Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith said Fried was bow hunting for white-tail deer in the area and was believed to be walking out of the hunting grounds when he was shot. Smith said Fried was injured by a large caliber bullet that struck Fried from the side and went along the front of his chest.

Smith said the warden remained injuried at the scene for about an hour before emergency responders could reach him. He was transported to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital to be stablized. Fried was later transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he is in stable condition.

Investigators are calling the shooting "an unfortunate hunting accident." Smith said they believe the shooting was a "non-intentional act," but investigators have not ruled out foul play.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department investigators have been talking with witnesses and hope to release additional details about the investigation Monday morning.

Smith said investigators have interviewed the person who is believed to have shot Fried.

For the life of me I don't understand how anyone could mistake a person for a deer, especially since most people now use scopes. I do not use a scope just open sights and have never had a problem telling the difference. Someone was either shooting at anything that moved or shot him on purpose, either way they should take away that persons gun as they are not responsible enough to own one.
