TYLER — Monday on Univision, President Obama said schools should never be just quote "teaching the test."
He said "all you're learning about is how to fill out a little bubble on an exam and little tricks that you need to do in order to take a test and that's not going to make education interesting."
Bill Martin with the Sylvan Learning Center in Tyler says the President made good points and bad ones, but you just can't avoid standardized testing.
He says it gets a bad rap because of the way the tests are handled.
"It's not the test itself that is bad, it's not the TAKS test that is bad! It's the way the TAKS test is used to control money. And thats whats so bad about this whole process is that government holds over the schools heads, money. 'You have to do this or we're not gonna give you funds...'"
One other way the President says students should be evaluated is attendance.
