New data shows Mississippi is ranked the highest obese state in the country.

Obesity is a chronic disease that has been a major health problem throughout the country.

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention shows that 12 states that have the highest adult obesity rate, the South ranking the highest being close to 30 percent.

Mississippi ranked the highest at 35 percent, and Colorado was ranked the lowest under 30 percent. Texas is tied with Kentucky a little over 30 percent.

Obesity rates are growing, the report is based on 2011 numbers which is a little higher than 2010.

The numbers were based on a telephone survey, people giving a self-report of their height and weight.

There are many factors that have contributed to the obesity epidemic in the U.S.

Health Professionals say there are ways to reverse obesity by committing to physical activity and food environments encouraging healthy choices.

With this new data, people can possibly make a few changes for a healthier lifestyle.
