On June 17, 2010 at around 11:45 p.m., Longview Officer Charles Whitlock was off-duty and on the way home from work when he spotted a theft suspect at the Food Fast convenience store at 1711 Judson Road.

During Officer Whitlock’s shift, several thefts were reported in which a white male, wearing a black shirt and orange hat, driving a red Ford Escort had stolen beer from several convenience stores across the city. Officer Whitlock observed a man matching the exact description entering the Food Fast, so he stopped in case the man attempted to steal beer from the store.

As Officer Whitlock pulled into the parking lot, the man ran out of the store with two 30-packs of beer. Officer Whitlock demanded the suspect to stop, but he fled in his vehicle. Officer Whitlock called for assistance and on-duties officers stopped the suspect at the intersection of Eden Drive and Eastman Road.

The suspect, Spencer Lee Smith, was charged with evading arrest in a vehicle (State jail felony) and theft (Class B misdemeanor). It was found that Smith had committed thefts of beer four different times earlier in the day. Smith was booked into the Gregg County Jail.
