(CNN) — A boat with 27 aboard capsized in New York, killing at least two people and throwing dozens of passengers watching fireworks into dark waters, authorities said early Thursday .
The 36-foot vessel capsized in Oyster Bay Harbor in Long Island on Wednesday night.
There were conflicting reports on the numbers of fatalities -- with the Nassau County Police Department saying three people died while the Coast Guard had two.
Rescue teams that included police and firefighters pulled 25 people from the water, including one who is in critical condition, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
"The 25 rescued people were transported to a safe location," the Coast Guard said.
An investigation is under way.
