University issues 'all clear'

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Police have identified the man who opened fire on the University of Texas campus before killing himself as a 19-year-old student from Austin.

Police said Tuesday that the gunman was Colton Tooley. College records indicate Tooley was a sophomore math major. His parents did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press.

No other injuries were reported. Police said they believe Tooley acted alone.

Campus police said earlier in the day that a man fired an automatic weapon on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library, then shot himself dead.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Law enforcement officials say they believe the gunman who opened fire with an assault rifle at a University of Texas campus library before killing himself was a student who acted alone.

Campus police Chief Robert Dahlstrom at a Tuesday news conference that officials have ruled out the possibility of a
second shooter. The initial confusion was because the suspect fired shots in multiple locations.

Officials say the man fired AK-47 on the sixth floor of the library early Tuesday before killing himself.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Police with bomb-sniffing dogs checked buildings at the University of Texas in Austin for a possible second suspect after a masked gunman killed himself at a library.

UT police say nobody else was hurt. Police are checking to make sure no explosives were been left behind.

Investigators are trying to determine why the gunman, with an AK-47, opened fire on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library.

UT police spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon says the gunman then shot himself.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told a news conference that police also are investigating what he described as a second crime scene outside the library -- where shots also were fired.Acevedo says no shots were fired by law enforcement.

Senior Robby Reeb told ABCNews.com he was rushing through the campus late when he saw a man in a ski mask, wearing a suit and carrying an assault rifle.

Classes were canceled for the rest of today.

Police say they're searching for a possible second suspect. Nobody else was hurt. UT has canceled classes for the day. UT police spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon says a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library, then fatally shot himself.

Senior Robby Reeb told ABCNews.com he was rushing through the campus late for a class when the shooting happened. Reeb says he was walking from the business school when he "looked up and saw a man in a ski mask, wearing a suit, and carrying an assault rifle." Reeb says he called 911.

Investigators are trying to determine what led to the gunfire at the UT campus at Austin, which is one of the largest in the country with nearly 50,000 students.

The Perry-Castaneda Library is one of several on the campus and is one of the busiest undergraduate libraries.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A gunman opened fire today inside a University of Texas at Austin campus library then shot and killed himself -- and police are seeking a possible second suspect.

UT police spokesperson Rhonda Weldon says no one else was injured. Investigators are trying to determine what led to the gunfire.

An emergency alert warning of an "active shooter" and "shelter in place" was listed on the UT website more than an hour after the gunfire happened on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library.

The website says: "A suspected shooter in PCL library is dead. Police are searching for possible second shooter. Lock doors, do not leave your building."

Welcond says a man with an automatic weapon opened fire inside the library, located on the south end of the sprawling campus, and no shots were fired outside -- then he shot himself.

On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman went to the 28th floor observation deck at the UT clock tower and began shooting at people below. He killed 16 people and wounded nearly three dozen before police killed him about 90 minutes after the siege began.
