East Texas has a long history in the oil and gas industry.

Oil and gas was once the economic driver.

During the 1970s, petroleum prices rose dramatically, benefiting Texas and creating a lot of jobs.

Those who started working when the industry was booming in the 70s are now hitting retirement.

And there is a huge demand for their replacements.

"Most of us our reaching retirement age now and because of the low oil and gas prices that occurred in the 80s and 90s and 2000s, the young people just did not get into the oil and gas business."

Rodney Thomson, Production Manager at Fair Oil, has been in this industry for 40 years and has seen a lot of changes.

"Especially in the area of the technology that's being used for developing oil and gas reserves," said Thomson.

Thomson says with his generation of workers retiring, it's a great time for young people to get into the industry.

Colleges are now offering courses for this type of work.

Thomson's company along with others are offering internships and jobs for college graduates with a high paying salary.

"Exto and the other large major companies are hiring interns and hiring graduates from college to help replace the older seasoned professionals," said Thomson.

Ronald Reagan is responsible for the low oil prices which bankrupted the oil and gas industry in the 1980's. In his deal with the Saudi's to bankrupt Russia, oil sold for as little as $10./barrel. Texans lost their jobs and home foreclosures skyrocketed. Media called it the Savings and Loan Scandal to hide the real truth that our economy was devastated. Oil and gas production is the creation of wealth, not the redistribution of a dollar. The RTC was created and we were looted by foreclosure.
