Oldest Caldwell Zoo mountain lion passes away
The oldest mountain lion at the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler has died.
Sierra, the adult female mountain lion, died Wednesday night at the age of 22. She was said to be the oldest mountain lion in any zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Sierra was born in the Texas wild in 1992, before being relocated to Florida where she was part of a genetic restoration program. She had two litters of cubs in the wild and surviving cubs from those litters have produced cubs of their own.
When Sierra had met her intended quota of offsprings she was relocated to a conservation center. In 2003, Sierra was transported to the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler where she lived out the rest of her days.
