Tyler TX (KETK) — One local East Texas man turned a hobby of toy making into a small business.
Winford Stone opened a little toy making shop right outside of his house on Hwy 110 N.
"It's a hobby that's become a passion," said Stone.
He worked different jobs throughout his life and retired as a handyman.
Stone started building wooden toys for his youngest grandson Colton, when he was about three years old.
"We keep our little grandson after school until his parents pick him up and I just made a couple little cars for him."
The grandfather of three built wooden teddy bears, cars trains and others started to notice his work.
"Everyone that saw said why don't you make more and it just kind of exploded."
Now five years later, Winford's Wooden Toys is open.
"It's really turned into something really neat.''
Nothing big, a small shop outside of his house, and he wants to keep it that way.
"I want to be able to do this when I want to do it and enjoy it."
His latest work, a school bus for his high school's 50 year reunion.
"Everybody just loved it. They wanted me to auction it off and I said no I'm not auctioning it off I'm taking it back home (laughs)."
Stone said he is up to create anything.
"Anyone that wants something special made, I'll try to make it for them."
Now that his grandson is a little older, the passion for making toys is becoming a family affair.
"He comes down here with me and he's learning to operate some of the equipment."
Stone said this is something he has always wanted to do and he is going to make wooden toys for the rest of his life.
"As long as I am able, as long as I am able."
