Nacogdoches County, TX (KETK) — The Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office is investigating why a one month old baby has been abandoned and was just given to a resident in the Melrose community.
Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that the deputies were notified of a call Tuesday evening to meet with the complainant at the Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.
The complainant said that a man and a woman came to her house with a one month old baby and handed her the child. A lady only known by the first name of Jody at the time gave the child to her and said to that she couldn't handle raising her child anymore and then left the complainants home with the male.
The complainant noticed that the child had heavy labored breathing and was very congested.
Deputies met with the complainant and one month old child at the hospital. While working on the investigation, deputies on the scene learned that a DPS trooper had arrested the man and a woman with the first name Jody in a traffic stop. Authorities later learned that this was the mother of the child. Both were arrested by DPS workers for intoxication and possession of marijuana.
The mother now identified as Jodie Strahan, 26, and the male, Norman McDonald, 47, both from Nacogdoches County.
After further investigation both suspects were charged with abandoning or endangering a child and were booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail. Child Protective Services were called and the child was taken into their custody.
The child did receive medical attention at the hospital and is now in good health.
