An Ore City city council place will be decided by a coin flip following a tie.

According to City Secretary Gail Weir, Steve Heim was originally thought to have defeated Jeannett Orms 48-44, but then officials discovered one of the boxes from an electronic voting machine had not been counted. The votes were recounted, and it was determined Tuesday morning the two had tied at 55.

Rather than hold another election, both candidates agreed to a coin flip, which is allowed under state law.

The coin flip will take place Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at during a special session at city hall. The winner will be named to an unexpired term on the Ore City Council.

Weir said she has not seen something of this nature happen since she took over as city secretary 15 years ago.
