Tyler, Tx ( KETK) — In an effort to get rid of feral hogs, the annual Big Nasty Hog Contest takes aim at the problem. The month-long competition came to a close on March 1. Competitors have until Friday to send in a video of their hunt, and they are expecting many submissions.
KETK spoke with the organizations President, Jeremy Sickles, who said the video doesn't just need to be a large hog. Sickles said, "It's just to verify that they did follow the rules we have established. Anybody else that had a good video, it doesn't even have to be a hog just something funny that happened, you know tripped or fell. They can enter those in for the best video".
The largest hog shot, weighs 318 pounds. This year there were 106 hogs killed, with the average weight of the hogs weighing in at 146 pounds. Collectively, the total weight of the hogs were 15,521 pounds. However, their mascot Big Willy still brings in the bacon, weighing 400 pounds. Sickles jokes, "Big Willy would have won. If the owner would have let him loose, someone would have come up with a big prize getting Willy down".
Various awards will be given out at the closing ceremonies, with the top prize being four-wheelers. The closing ceremony for top competitors will be on March 15. To further check out the competition, visit, http://texasbignastyhogcontest.com/ .
