The government is advising people not to eat any product made with peanut butter, until the FDA can determine how many products have been contaminated by a strain of deadly salmonella.

Already, more than 450 people have been poisoned and six people have died as a result of the outbreak.

The FDA is recommending consumers avoid eating cookies, ice cream, crackers or anything made with peanut butter or peanut paste for the time being.

That's until Government officials can determine the source of the outbreak.

NBC Chief Medical Editor Dr. Nancy Synderman says, "Salmonella poisoning causes high fever, nausea, vomiting and if you've been sick with salmonella believe me you're sitting back and wondering have you had any contaminated food. It's a food poisoning that you know you've been sick and you'll seek medical attention."

Safety officials say, there is no indication that major brands of peanut butter sold in stores are a problem, but they don't want to expand the risk.
