Thanks to a group of elementary school kids, Texas might soon be on its way to having an official state dessert.

Some first graders from the Central Texas area of Georgetown made a solid case to Texas state law makers this week, to try and make pecan pie our official state dessert.

"They had really good reasoning," said Sen. Charles Schwertner of District 5. The state nut is the pecan nut and state tree is pecan tree. They deduced logically that it's important the state pie be the pecan pie."

Sen. Schwertner says he helped draft a bill for the students, and Tuesday, the youngsters spoke in front of a committee, who passed it.

"I think it shows young and active individuals can participate at all levels and all ages in our democracy and make a difference," Sen. Schwertner said.

Most east Texans we spoke with agree pecan pie is the way to go.

"We sell a lot of pies, probably about 7,000 slices of pecan pies a year," said Jason Bush of Traditions Restaurant. " ...We buy (pecans) from Houston so it's definitely a Texas product."

Sen. Schwertner says bill will go to the floor next week, and fully expects it to pass out of the Senate.
