The diminishing presence of Pilgrim’s Pride in East Texas will be even less in coming weeks as the company divests its Pittsburg area commercial egg operations in a sale to Jackson, Miss.-based Cal-Maine Foods.
Cal-Maine officials on Wednesday announced the company has reached a deal to purchase Pilgrim’s Pride assets that include two production complexes with capacity for approximately 1.4 million laying hens and adjacent land near Pittsburg.
Financial details of the sale were not released. Dolph Baker, president and CEO of Cal-Maine, said the company expects to close the transaction in August.
“Cal-Maine Foods is very pleased to announce this acquisition. Pilgrim’s Pride has an excellent reputation and strong brand recognition with a well-established customer base,” Baker said in a prepared statement. “These production facilities will complement our existing operations in Texas and the additional capacity will enhance our ability to serve our customers in the Texas markets
