Local law enforcement encourage East Texans  to have a plan before heading out for New Year's celebrations.

New Year's celebrations will be overflowing and the alcohol may be as well. People will have a drink or two, or perhaps three, who knows some lose count, then they put themselves in danger by getting behind the wheel.

Kristie Brian, Public Information Officer for Longview Police give East Texans some tips:

-Have a designated driver.

-Take a taxi.

-Do not get in a vehicle if the driver has been drinking.

Brian says, if someone appears to intoxicated while driving, they will be pulled over and will we asked for a breath sample, known as a breathalyzer test.  If the driver refuses they will be taken to the hospital for a blood test.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports, in 2012, more than 1,200 Texans were arrested for DWI's.

DWI's can cost thousands, stay on your record for years, or worse- you can kill someone.

Think about it, would you rather pay for DUI penalties, put yourself or someone in danger or pay $20-$30 for a cab?

During the holidays, DWI arrests increase. Brian says, law enforcement will be in full force as New Year's approaches.

Ring in the new year at great start not behind bars.

Alcohol & nicotine are drugs legally sold & taxed. The tax is called a "sin tax" and is called that for a reason. Alcohol kills more people every year than breast cancer. Some die quickly in accidents. Others die slowly from the effects of drinking on the body such as liver cirrhosis, mouth & stomach cancers, internal bleeding, & a condition called "wet brain" where memory is permanently impaired.
Nicotine will give you lung, mouth, throat & stomach cancer among others.
STOP killing yourselves!
