Residents of Longview’s Valley View and Forest Park neighborhoods would vote together in 2012 under a recommendation to go before Gregg County commissioners next month.

Five other changes to individual voting box precincts, including a significant one for the Liberty City area, will be among recommendations as Elections Administrator Kathryn Nealy attempts to shorten waiting lines.

“We’re trying to make it a little more even according to the voter turnout on election day,” Nealy said. “Working with it for 10 years, you know where the heavy turnout is, and you know where the light turnout is.”

Actual voting locations will be decided later, including those that have been inside schools no longer open as a rebuilding plan in Longview ISD continues.

Big changes are coming to other election elements, including the new Voter ID law requiring an approved photo ID to cast a ballot.

Nealy said she would be in Austin next week to learn specifics about that law, including which IDs are acceptable and which are not, along with a grocery list of other election changes coming out of the legislative session that just ended.
