New details in recent wet-dry election

August 27, 2009 - 9:14pm

TYLER It's been a few months since the Winona wet-dry alcohol election when Proposition One did not pass, meaning beer and wine could not be sold in Justice of the Peace Precinct Four in Smith County and the city of Winona. Now, armed with new information, a pro alcohol group is crying foul. Smith County Citizens for Economic Growth held a news conference Thursday, the group say's they want voters to know all the facts involved that may have really affected the outcome of that election. The group say's one of the driving forces behind no booze in the county was arrested for drug paraphernalia in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and they also allege illegal voting by a former Winona election official. Now, the group is pointing to a recent finance report. They say a consultant who was paid for by a political action committee helped drive the election to the so - called dry side. They say the pac was paid for by alcohol interests from wet counties in East Texas and the DFW area. Smith County officials say they are waiting on an upcoming ruling from a judge, and have no comment at this time.
