WASHINGTON, D.C.—Some jobless Americans are one step closer to keeping their unemployment benefits.

Tuesday the House of Representatives passed a bill to extend unemployment compensation for more than a million people who could lose their benefits by the end of the year. The 13-week extension would only apply to jobless workers in the District of Columbia and 27 states with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or higher.

The bill passed the House of Representatives, 331 to 83. Similar legislation is pending in the Senate.

Cynthia so sorry to hear that you are losing your apartment. I myself have been on unemployment since April of 2008 and this weeks check was my last one for all the extensions. I am lucky enough to have a husband who works, and hasn't lost his job as of yet, however, we are moving into a cheaper home since we lost our house after I lost my job and pay alot of money for a lil 2 bedroom trailer. So off to cheaper we go now that my unemployment has stopped. As for the 8.5% and lower doesn't make a bit of since to me, they still can't find jobs so therefore it's just gonna make their numbers go up, it's needs to be for all, not just for some. Yes, I will get the extension because I live in GA and our number is 10.2% but it's still not fair to all the millions of us in the same boat. GOOD LUCK to everyone

I have been unemployed since 2006. I have exhausted all benefits. My husband is disabled.

I am so appreciative of this bill being passed. I am one of thee unemployed workers who really needs this 13 weeks extension. I have been laid of since 09/28/2007 and I have exhausted all of my extensions. As I write this comment I am packing up my apartment and I have no place to go but to a homeless shelter, I still have a Son in high school and I am fifty years old it seems like my hope and faith in the system has failed me. Sometimes I lay in my bed at night thinking how could this have happened to me I am a good and dependable worker. But it is what it is, well I know you probably don't want to here my problems, but I pray that nobody has to go through what I've been through the last two years of my life, just trying to survive and stay alive and keeping my head above water, it is really hard. And being fifty years into my journey it seems like nobody wants to hire me at my age when the only experience you have is in manufacturing and assembly and production, most of these jobs have left the state on Michigan. PLEASE HELP US IN MICHIGAN. Thank You.

Is the state of Texas to recieve the 13-week extension of unemployment benefits??

Why would they leave states out that are under 8.5%? The unemployed in all 50 states deserve the same treatment?
