MEXICO CITY - Pope Benedict XVI descends into Mexico's Roman Catholic heartland Friday before heading to Cuba for nearly a week of religious celebration and messaging that for some also will be fraught with political significance.

This will be the first trip to either nation and only the second to Latin America for Benedict, 84, who assumed the papacy in 2005 upon the death of the hugely popular John Paul II. Latin America accounts for nearly half of the world's more than 1 billion Roman Catholics.
