A new animal shelter is on the agenda for Wednesday morning's city council meeting.

The council will discuss the possible location, design, and costs of an animal shelter.

City officials are saying the shelter will be funded by the half cent sales tax.

KETK spoke with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, S.P.C.A., President Deborah Dobbs who is dissapointed in the decision.

Dobbs tells KETK there could've been a partnership between the S.P.C.A. and the city of Tyler, but due to funds it wasn't possible.

"We met and we discussed it and we really struggled with a decision and the board did not feel that we could give $200,000 to the city of Tyler to build their building that we needed to use our donations for our building," said Dobbs.

However, she knows the city needs to do this...

"We're sorry, we're disappointed, but the most important thing is the city of Tyler is going to build an animal shelter," said Dobbs.

Currently all animals are taken to the shelter in Jacksonville...

So a lot of times pet owners are never reunited with their furry friends.

"Many people who lose their dog have no idea their best friend is now in cherokee county thirty miles away."

Pets Fur People executive director Gayle Helms agrees that this shelter is a necessity for the city.

"I think its long overdue and it's a wonderful step in the right direction," said Helms.
